ORANGE, OAT & SULTANA COOKIES

I had the such a lovely, peaceful sunday today. When I woke up the sun was shining (for a freakin' change) and after a quick cruise of Pinterest with breakfast I became obsessed with the idea of baking cookies. I eventually settled upon a Leith's recipe I found on BBC Good Food and trotted off to the shops to stock up on the necessaries.
After a quick run (and a quick near collapse at the end) I made eggs for lunch and, after a bit of work,  set about making the cookies. They were/are DELICIOUS (I managed not to eat all 18...). The coconut makes for a macaroon-ish texture, the chopped walnuts offer up perfect crunch. The perfect accompaniment to a ginormous cup of Earl Grey.
Granted - I bet the American cookies wouldn't invite my cookies to eat lunch at their table, but the taste and texture more than make up for their outward appearance.

You'll need:

100g butter
1 egg
50g mashed ripe banana
1tsp vanilla extract
100g light brown soft sugar (I used muscavado)
1/2 tsp grated orange zest (I accidentally used zest of a whole orange - to excellent effect!)
100g wholemeal flour
1/4 tsp salt
1 tsp baking powder
100g rolled oats
25g desiccated coconut
50g chopped walnuts
75g sultanas or chocolate chips

You'll find the method over on the BBC Good Food website here.

This weekend we headed to The New Forest for a night - going for a leisurely stroll during the day and picking up a new throw in Beaulieu before heading to The Pig in Brockenhurst where we watched Freaky Friday with a bottle of bubbles and then headed downstairs for cocktails and supper.

We've been to The Pig once before and decided to return for our six year anniversary. The rooms are so beautiful and cosy and chic, the service is warm, relaxed and friendly and the hotel itself is perfection.

Alas, the one downside was that the restaurant has sadly changed a bit since our last visit. We absolutely LOVED the food a couple of years ago. There was enormous attention to detail, the menu was exciting and the food was utterly delicious. Memorably so, desperate-to-back-so.

The atmosphere of the dining room was unchanged but to be brutally honest, we were disappointed with the food. It's gone more pub-grub (steak, ham hock, some incredibly unnecessary deep frying of supposedly "literally picked that day" greens) which is fine... if you know that's what you're getting. We had a table at 8pm but, after waiting to be served for quite a while (our waitress was very apologetic), my boyfriend's first and second menu choices had already sold out.
The Pig describes itself as 'a restaurant with rooms' and I think on our last visit, it really felt like it was. This time, it felt like the emphasis had shifted away from the food and the kitchen garden - even though the rest of the hotel remained just as perfect as we remembered.

Despite all this, we did still have such a brilliant stay and I'd absolutely go back in a heartbeat (but maybe have just the one course in the dining room and focus more on the cocktails).

For our walk I wore: my boyfriend's Uniqlo down coat, Topshop Jamie Jeans and Hunter Wellington boots.

NEW IN: MOROCCAN SOUVENIRS

I knew before going to Morocco that I wanted to return with two things: patterned bowls and a straw bag. It was horribly difficult to choose between all the beautiful offerings in the souk, but I came away with a brightly embroidered straw bag and four bowls. We resisted getting a big serving bowl - which I regret - but there's always next time!

TRAVEL: MOROCCO PHOTO DIARY

A few of my favourite pictures from our week-long trip to Essaouira in Morocco. It was all pots of fresh mint tea, bowl picking and bartering in the bustling souk, marvelling at the camels and cow-laden lorries that appeared out of nowhere before heading back to our lovely hotel to read by the pool and enjoy drinks on the terrace (during which time I spent many an hour ogling the painfully chic French families who were there during our stay. Suffice to say it was a Marant-fest. My whole wardrobe felt redundant after just ten seconds of watching them!)

We stayed at the absolutely beautiful Jardin des Douars, just 15 minutes from the Essaouira's seaside Medina.

Two restaurants that I recommend very, very highly are La Table by Madada for amazing seafood dishes and Umia (I won't be forgetting their salted caramel chocolate mousse in a hurry that's for darn sure). Be sure to pop in to Taros Cafe before or after supper (or both!) for rooftop drinks with a sunset view and live music.

LIFESTYLE: BREAKFASTS

One of my new year "resolutions" was to make more interesting, varied breakfasts. One of my birthday presents was a new blender and I have been blending up a storm. The pictures above involved spinach or kale, green apple, banana, lime, ginger and yoghurt. My current favourite combination generally features fresh berries, banana, seeds, yoghurt, ginger, agave nectar and a dash of lime.
I also recently made Tom Kerridge's granola (with dried apricots, apple and raisins, toasted flaked almonds and sunflower seeds) and have been enjoying that as a nutritious "treat" type of breakfast with natural yoghurt. Blueberry pancakes of course remain one of the most perfect ways to break my sunday fast.

SPOILS OF THE FESTIVE SEASON

I'll admit that I could have been a little more prompt with my Christmas/Birthday present post, but when the norovirus is one of your Christmas presents, things tend to get a bit delayed! Boxing day morning onwards was rather sadly wiped out - my planned birthday tea at Sketch had to be called off and our trip to The Pig in the New Forest too. But I'm sure we'll find another day to go so I can't be too blue about it all!

And anyway, how blue could I be with lots of beautiful presents to stare at from my sickbed. I've picked out a few of my favourites: J.Crew silver brogues, new coffee table books for my little book stack, Jo Malone cologne (Orange Blossom this time!), an array of candles from Christian Tortu, Diptyque and Space NK and beautiful J.Crew costume jewellery:

I hope you had a lovely Christmas and New Year! Here's to 2014!

LIFESTYLE: The Fast Diet Recipe Book

First things first, I'd like to stress how much I love food. Past food-related posts wouldn't leave you in much doubt of that! I look forward to my supper each night enormously and am pretty put out if it doesn't cut the mustard. I have a good, healthy, balanced diet, but I think every now and then my portion sizes can be a tad on the generous side or I allow myself seconds where it is entirely unnecessary. Given it's that bikini time of year once again, I tend to pay a little more attention to the shape of my middle than I otherwise would. I'm also still keen to shed the few kgs that were put on during my university days.

BUT. I do not like diets. I simply cannot live like that, I enjoy meals too much to replace them with a dry cracker, a scraping of marge if I'm lucky. I'm sure the end result would be me looking pale, unhappy and not very healthy. That's just not how I roll. I also know it isn't something I could sustain long term, so it would be a fairly short-lived quick fix. My preferred plan is therefore to up the exercise and watch what I'm eating a bit more closely, keeping calories slightly down and not allowing myself too many treats in the week.

That said, after reading about the Fast Diet in this month's Red magazine (which I love so very much), I was very keen to look into the diet a bit more. In her article, Mimi Spencer describes it as a diet for foodies (you can see now why it appeals...). You eat how you normally would 5 days a week, and fast on two days by allowing yourself only 500 calories (600 for men). I think this sounds like it would be pretty do-able for a lot of people, and something you could keep up without truck loads of willpower.
However, what intrigued me even more was the idea of having a recipe book of low calorie, yet tasty, breakfasts, lunches and suppers to turn to when I want to bring my calorie intake down a notch. I don't need to shed oodles of weight, so don't feel I need to turn to the diet in its full form at the moment.  I also think it is incredibly useful to have a resource like this at home, because rather frequently one can think they're eating something very virtuous and later be horrified when it comes to doing the calorie sums at the end of the day. This is why the Fast Diet Recipe Book is now rubbing shoulders with Jamie, Nigella et al on my recipe book shelf. It enables me to plan low calorie meals on a day-to-day basis and, when combined with the My Fitness Pal App, I can keep track of how I'm doing day-to-day. Whilst on the topic of the aforementioned app, it is pretty invaluable. It is so surprising how easily we can convince ourselves we've had a healthy day and have thus earned crisps/dessert/more dessert, when in actual fact you've done no such thing. It certainly made me realise I could not allow myself an afternoon hot cross bun back in Easter and then have crisps and olives pre-supper on the same day. A useful realisation I'm sure you'll agree!
For my first foray, I used one of the book's breakfast ideas for lunch, doubling it up and giving myself two medium soft boiled eggs (rather than one) alongside some steamed asparagus: 180 calories. I'd definitely recommend it!
